Directions

From Edinburgh Airport (EDI):
Distance to The Ben Doran is 7.5 miles, approximately 20 minutes' drive.

Getting there. Airlink 100 operates express bus services to the city centre. Buses run every 10 minutes and depart from the bus station next to the terminal. An open-return pass costs 5 GBP. The N22 night bus runs between midnight and 4 a.m. Taxis wait at a rank next to the terminal, and cost approximately 10 GBP-20 GBP to the city centre, depending on traffic and time of day. Waverley, Edinburgh's main railway station, can be reached by bus or taxi. Regular trains leave Waverley for Glasgow and most major destinations throughout Scotland and England. Prices are all subject to change.

Getting around. Edinburgh city and the Lothian region are served by a good bus network. There are hop-on, hop-off stops for city bus tours throughout central Edinburgh. Black cabs are available from the streets. The historic centre's cobbled streets are best explored by foot. Driving is not recommended for visitors, due to the complicated one-way systems.

Driving directions. From Edinburgh Airport:
Turn onto the City Bypass (A720), heading south and east.
Drive around the city and exit the bypass at Straiton Junction, joining the A701 towards the city centre.
The Ben Doran is three miles along this road on the right.

Would stay there again

Although the distance on the map shows the Ben Doran pretty close to the Royal Mile, take the bus (it's easy and convenient)! Maps don't show how hilly Edinburgh is!

Very impressed!

My partner and I stayed here for a few days of sightseeing in January. The hotel was clean and comfortable, with very helpful, friendly staff and excellent breakfasts. It is ideally placed for easy access to all the attractions of the city centre - it is only 15 minutes on foot from Princes Street, and there are also very frequent buses. There is also an impressive array of extras on offer, such as help with booking excursions, and room servic and packed lunches are also available. It is a lovely hotel and I would definitely stay there again.

It was alright!

It is good for a guesthouse-so dont expect a hotel. The room was comfortable, tidy but the bed was quite uncomfortable. We had a room facing the front so it was quite noisy from the traffic. Shared bathroom was less of a problem that we first thought but still annoying if you want to go to the loo and have to quickly get dressed again. Bathrooms however were nice, clean and well maintained. Room service menu very limited. Service was great by all staff, who were perfectly happy to call a cab for us (and cancel) with no hassles. Walkable distance to city centre. All in all, a good little place to stay in.

Ideal Sight-Seeing Base

My girlfriend and I visited Edinburgh in February for a Valentine's Day weekend break. The Ben Doran was ideally suited to our needs - while not the most luxurious or modern hotel, this comfortable Georgian guesthouse was an ideal base from which to stroll into Edinburgh every morning. Initially dubious about a shared bathroom, we were pleasantly surprised at how little of an issue it was (and you can get en-suite rooms if you prefer). The staff are friendly and relaxed and the cooked breakfast an excellent way to start the day, and the room and bathroom immaculately clean. I wouldn't recommend the Ben Doran to people hoping for a pampered stay with lots of hotel amenities, but would definitely do so for anyone who is after a pleasant place to sleep, relax in the evening after a busy day and have a good breakfast at excellent value.

Basement accomodations

As for site seeing take the buses, nothing is in walking distance. The bus service is excellent, buy an all day pass for 2.50 its well worth it.

Lovely Guesthouse

Ride the Lothian buses to get around. They are excellent, it's very cheap for a day ticket, and the buses run everywhere. The bus map is fairly easy to read, and if not, I have never met more friendly bus drivers in the world.
