A short guide to: St. James

With a few billionaire residents, St. James is nicknamed the Platinum Coast. This scenic flatland hosts a few large golf courses and Paynes Bay Beach, a local favorite good for swimming. Holetown, the parish’s largest city, marks the spot where English colonists landed in 1625. There, the main drag teems with restaurants. Barbados’ highest point, Mt. Hillaby, rises due east of Holetown.

What a lovely spot to celebrate a Birthday!

Excellent location and very friendly staff. Some of the bathrooms need refurbishing to bring them up to standard with the rest of the hotel. Tea/coffee making facilities would be an advantage in the rooms. I celebrated my Bithday whilst we were there and the staff gave us a 'bar' in the garden with a member of staff and we hosted 20 friends to a buffet lunch. Nothing was too much trouble for them. It was very memorable and the staff even brought a Birthday cake! Although we were only there for a few days, we came back feeling extremely relaxed. We would certainly stay there again.

Could do better

Tamarind Cove was on a pretty beach, looked fairly good and our room was very comfortable, however, for the price we paid, I really don't think we got value for our money. That may be more a factor of it being in Barbados more than anything else, but for a similar price elsewhere in the Caribbean we could have gotten an excellent all inclusive package (we had b-fast only), incl. free diving, service on the beach, activities etc. They also definately need to make more of their restaurants. The food was alright, but considering the steep competition - the many excellent restaurants in the area - they need to make alot more of their beach location and do something about the restaurant's look, feel and ambience, which was very old-fashioned and reminiscent of a 2-3 star hotel chain restaurant.

Beautiful resort, not the friendliest staff

Overall, it was a beautiful hotel. Tile floors, clay archways, 3 unique pools and very clean rooms were a plus. The beach was small but offered free water sports and a small reef for snorkeling. The locals were a bit pushy trying to sell services such as foot rubs while we tried to relax. Eventually we would retreat to the pool where no one would bother us. Not much else to see. For shopping, DON'T go to Bridgetown. Instead, try the craft shops near Bridgetown or the shopping center in Holetown. Don't walk the streets at night.

Great time in Barbados

Really enjoyed the hotel, room and services were fine, beach and water sports too. Food is not gourmet but was what I expected. Overall it is relaxing, wiht a nice beach front bar, and I felt welcome and comfortable as a single woman travelling alone. The staff were friendly and very helpful, really nice people and very proud of the Island. Guests mostly British couples and families. I can't wait to go back.

Our Third Visit in Three Years

We've had a great vacation for the past three January visits. Always stayed in the Ocean View Jr Suites, which we highly recommend. Tamarind has a long lovely beach with lots of shade. No problem getting lounges. The rooms are spread out over a wide area, most with ocean views, so it never seems crowded. Food is very good for being included in price. Great place for older couples. If you're looking for a lot of activites or a singles scene at the resort, this isn't the place. If you want a relaxing vacation, with interesting people (mainly British) this is a great spot.

Boredom at the Tamarind Cove

This was are 5th time in Barbados since 1978.Our tripwas great but our stay at this hotel was not.At check-in they could not find our reservation but after 10 minutes they did find it.Not a great introduction. Our room smelled of urine in one corner of the room and when you sat on the toilet you were dripped on from the ceiling above. The beach and pool area was neat and tidy as were the grounds. The staff at the pool bar are old and miserable and should be replaced with a more livelier crew .they were very slow. The lunch and dinner were just okay if you like cafeteria food.We went off site for most meals even though it was included in the price. This was are 20th trip to the Carribean and this place is at the bottom of our list.

A relaxed hotel to return to

We have visited Tamarind Cove 5 times so that in itself is an endorsement of the hotel. However the standard of the hotel is not always consistent. The full board food standard is not as good as previously, very unimaginative buffet style meals. The dining room lacks atmosphere, previously evening meals were served with candlelight but stark lighting now in place. The hotel grounds are immaculately maintained and rooms are clean and maid service excellent with abundance of fresh towels. Furniture in rooms looks tired with chipped side tables. However beach front position of hotel is excellent and overall this hotel is ideal for a very relaxing if not luxurious holiday. I would return again.

Couldn't Get closer to the Beach!

Hotel was very close to the beach and it was a pleasure to walk 20 mtrs to the sea. Our room was clean and fresh but we felt that the grouting round the bath could do with a freshen up and the shower was ready to be updated. Service in the restaurants and pool bar was slow, but the food was good and there was quite a selection on the buffet at each meal.
