A short guide to: Cultural District - Japantown

Nearby, City Hall’s golden dome sparkles amid the Civic Center’s concrete gray. The live arts thrive at the San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center, one of the nation’s largest. A five-tiered Peace Pagoda marks Japantown. Castro District, the city’s main gay neighborhood, is a short ride away, as is Haight-Ashbury, the counterculture bastion that is a gateway to Golden Gate Park.

Excellent service - highly recommended

As soon as we walked into the Hotel we were greeted as old friends - it is our third visit.None of the staff could have been more helpful, and our one problem was fixed immediately. The bedroom was very comfortable, and the bathroom of good size. We enjoyed breakfast where the service was quick and food excellent. We did not eat there in the evening as the restaurant is closed Sunday and Monday. There is a free wine reception for residents daily. The hotel is situated 5 blocks from Union Square, the main shopping centre, and from the cable car to Fisherman's Wharf. On arrival, the reception staff warned us of the parts of the City to avoid. In all our visits we have never encountered the slightest difficulty. There is a well-stocked supermarket opposite. There is a water dispenser on each floor, although we were assured the tap water was perfectly drinkable. Our room was on the 9th floor and very quiet so far as the Hotel was concerned. However, the San Francisco Fire Department disturbed us with their sirens as we prefer to keep the window open whenever possible. Why so much noise even at three o'clock in the morning! This complaint must be common to most SF hotels. Overall we found this Hotel excellent value and the service the best we have found anywhere. The reception staff in particular are most welcoming and will do all they can. We will definitely stay here on our next visit.

A nice weekend break

I booked this hotel after doing a lot of searching for a decent hotel in San Francisco and was still a little apprehensive my choice when our cab drove us to the hotel via some really seedy areas. However, the hotel was great. It was centrally located, easy to get around the city, and our room was comfortable. We arrived earlier than check-in time, but were allowed to check-in right away, which was really convenient. I liked how the hotel used many "green" things like recycle bins in the rooms and free wi-fi. Also, there was a wine tasting every evening, but we kept missing it. All in all it was a great place for the price and location in a city where it seems hard to find a decent hotel. Only two downsides: no free breakfast in the morning, no fridge in the room.

paper thin walls

We stay for 2 nights for a quick weekend get away we are very satisfied with the "top of the line" service and the cleanliness of the hotel, small but nice and very well kept. The only problem was that the walls are paper thin so if you get noisy neighbors you would not enjoy your stay as much. Take some plugs just in case but the hotel is definitely worth staying.

Clean and comfortable, a great staff, in a good location

The Hotel was impressively clean and the bathroom very modern for a hotel in such an old building with such character. The location was good for sightseeing. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. They went out of their way to take care of me on my stay. Highly recommended for the price.

The Hotel Carlton is a great first impression of San Francisco

It was our first trip to the city and therefore the hotel was major part of our experience. After we walked through the Carlton doors, we were greeted and let into our very welcoming room. It was very clean, the decor was colorful but not annoying and our bed was extremely welcoming - especially after our morning flight. Throughout our four-night stay at the Carlton, I have many fond memories including free toothpaste and surprisingly fun, nightly wine receptions. We had read a ton of reviews on this place and while there many compliments, there were also some criticisms that I would like to address. The number one negative comment was about the noise and thin walls. Yes, there were sirens occasionally and you could here other people moving about in the hotel, but it was minor. I may get less tolerant as I get older, but it wasn't as bad as I expected based on some reviews. The second criticism has to be about the neighbourhood. Homelessness exists and the sketchy Tenderloin district is within walking distance, but anyone who wanders around aimlessly and passively in a new city maybe shouldn't be travelling by themselves. Not once did we feel uneasy in the area. Another negative comment that I had read a couple of time before our trip was in regards to the Carlton staff being overly polite and borderline-annoying. I may not have developed intimate relationships with the Carlton staff, but I did talk to them enough to see that their concern for our comfort was genuine.

A well kept hotel, very conveniently located

We appreciated the very friendly and helpful staff. Being on a three-weeks trip, we especially appreciated the closet, where the luggage could be stored, away from our daily life. Extended our stay at the Carlton from planned 5 to 9 days. The only thing missing is a fridge in the room.

A wonderful stay!

We had a great time. The only caveat was it was not clear how much the parking was (until we got there, and it ended up being over $30/day). The staff were all very friendly, upbeat, and jokesters.

San Fran-Castro

The hotel has much history. With so many modern amenities. The beds are a bit uncomfortable. No flat screen TV however you should not be in your hotel room in with so much city to explore. Everything else was great.

Gorgeous hotel!!!

This place is fantastic, one of the best hotels we've stayed at. The room was amazing, the staff were wonderful and friendly and the location was great. We would love to go back, and will as soon as we've saved up again!
