It's very easy to get to from the BART and MUNI and w/in walking distance to Union Square and China Town. It does border to the Tenderloin area. I wouldn't recommend going out after dark alone.

The hotel is in the heart of Union Square and it costs a fortune to park overnight. The public transportation system is so good and so close that you should take the money you would have spent on parking and put it to better use. The only reason I could see for a car would be if you wanted a day trip out of the city to someplace like the wine country.

Staff very friendly and helpful. Good hotel and very well located, excellent to have access to Union Square, malls, cable cars, buses... If you do not have a car, it is the best place to be since it is very near from Market Street and you will be able to move in the city on your own and at very low price.

The hotel had started to get a little seedy so I stayed somewhere else for my previous trip. When I went back to the Maxwell this time, I noticed there was new carpeting in the room. However, they really need to remodel and update the lobby, hallways, and the rest of the hotel. It's too close to the Tenderloin to let it start deteriorating. People will stop going. The staff is always pleasant and helpful.

The little diner across the street is open all night. When you leave the hotel, try not to walk much west - gets sketchy. If you want to go west to the parks or something, use the muni. Shopping stores around Union Square are abundant. The airport is kinda far from the city so use the shuttle - a cab will cost you more than you think.

Check in, have a quick dinner at Max's downstairs, and then zip over to the theater.

The rooms were charming and nicely finished, but the windows were anything but quieting. The outside noise came into our room like there was nothing there. We never could determine if it was the conditioning unit, but it was unpleasant and made it terrible to get to sleep with emergency vehicles' sirens blasting throughout the night...We got almost no sleep.

Choosing Maxwell Hotel was a great decision! The location is perfect for a short stay in San Francisco, for sigthseeing and shopping! The furnishing is a bit dated, but everything was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful (even when I realized at the airport I had left some of my belongings behind in the room after checking out!) And all that for a really good price! Would stay there again any time!

I chose this because I love the deco period! It was also in a GREAT location- one block from Union Square! It has it's own fantastic restaurant (Maxwells) with NOT small portions of excellent food! If you don't go to sleep early then you won't mind the noise from it being on such a busy street. It's a fantastic little place for the price.
