A short guide to: Cultural District - Japantown

Nearby, City Hall’s golden dome sparkles amid the Civic Center’s concrete gray. The live arts thrive at the San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center, one of the nation’s largest. A five-tiered Peace Pagoda marks Japantown. Castro District, the city’s main gay neighborhood, is a short ride away, as is Haight-Ashbury, the counterculture bastion that is a gateway to Golden Gate Park.

In a terrible area

I reviewed this hotel's website before booking, and from the website, it looked like a comfortable, unique place to stay. I was extremely disappointed when we arrived. The hotel is in an area that has an inordinate amount of vagrants milling about. We were approached several times for change. I completely understand that a hotel can't control their surroundings, and in large cities there might be homeless folks about, but this hotel did nothing to make their entrance free of such advances. The only positive thing I can say, is that is directly of the F line which can take you from the Wharf to the Castro.

Inexpensive hotel, but unsafe outdoors.

The hotel and room were sufficiently clean and the staff was excellently helpful throughout. The only downside is really the neighborhood. Lots of porno shops in the vicinity with the usual sketchy characters that usually come with it. This includes the vagrants as well as the young kids looking for trouble (at night). Fortunately, SFPD had foot patrol in the area enough to make us feel safe enough. But, next time we're staying at the Palomar... :(

DIDN'T LIKE IT

The hotel was just OK, no air conditionair, we didnt have hot water all the time and the room wasn't the cleanest room I ever saw. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WAS THE LOCATION. IT WAS VERY CLOSE TO UNION SQ. BUT FAR ENOUGH TO WALK THROUGH STREETS FILLED WITH HOMELESS PEOPLE. TAKE A HOTEL IN UNION SQ. OR FAR FAR AWAY AND USE THE BUSES TO GET THERE....

Good Location San Fran Hotel

Ideally located in the heart of San Fran, the Renoir was ideal for me attending a business conference just fifteen minutes walk away. The hotel itself is a bit tatty and worn out. The lifts cluncked and screeched, the carpets look grubby, and it needs a new lick of paint some time soon. My room was decent enough if a little tatty. It did smell slightly of sweaty feet so my guess is the carpet could have done with a going wash. The bathroom was good if a little worn. One thing this hotel had though was character, and the staff were excellent especially on the day I checked out and looked after my luggage in a lock-up and organised an airport shuttle. The other issue was the homeless around the hotel especially at night which was quite alarming. I even got abused verbally by one guy, of which I will not repeat here. That's not the fault of the hotel though, and really it was very convenient for me. I'd recommend purely for it's practical location.

First time to San Francisco

When getting to the Renoir the receptionist gave us a tourist guide on san francisco, this book contains many money off coupons in side it for all the bay tours and funny museums there its good to look through it to find them and save a few bucks for shopping! Also getting a Muni Passpost saves Dollars too for 7 days you can ride the cable car, trolley and the bus as many times as you want! Especially the cable car rides up and down the steep hills of San Francisco is an attration its self.

Great for the price!

Walking distance to Bill Graham Auditorium so if attending a concert there, this place is pretty cool.
