A short guide to: Cultural District - Japantown

Nearby, City Hall’s golden dome sparkles amid the Civic Center’s concrete gray. The live arts thrive at the San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center, one of the nation’s largest. A five-tiered Peace Pagoda marks Japantown. Castro District, the city’s main gay neighborhood, is a short ride away, as is Haight-Ashbury, the counterculture bastion that is a gateway to Golden Gate Park.

Nice but nothing to write home about

Nice older hotel, clean, small rooms extremely small bathroom with a door that did not close very well. Decent if you will be out a lot and just need a place to sleep. The bed was comfortable.

Small rooms, but convient location

The rooms are small, but clean and nice. The location is perfect in terms of transportation, but close to a rough neighbor hood.

Not the greatest area, slow service but really beautiful!

The check in and check out process was horridly slow- be prepared to wait in line for a bit (even if you want to check in early). The area is not the greatest- a lot of strange people, probably some drugs and homelessness in there too. Despite the shady characters around, I believe that it is probably still safe to walk around at night. Good value for the room though. The hotel is so beautiful and the rooms are very nicely decorated and above all clean. I would definately stay here again!

Beautiful Hotel

Beautiful historic hotel located in San Fransico, with helpful staff. Reasonable prices and parking avaible, (for a fee). Subway entrance is right outside the door, for easy access across the city.

Good, convenient, not great

Lovely interior. Seedy area of town, but close to concert halls and civic center. Parking outrageously expensive, with a tax on top of the fee itself! Hotel restaurant OK, but meagre portions. Three cheeses were offered as one of the appetizers. Our waiter told us they were goat cheese, blue cheese, and cow cheese. Not too helpful.

Great deal for the price

We booked the trip last minute and honestly the pictures of the hotel and the star rating helped in making our decision. We booked the cheapest room and although it was very tight it was fine. We were never in the room and our housekeeper kept our room clean neat and tidy. I would stay there again for the price and location. Close to everything. As for the evenings it was ok to walk Market street up until 10-11pm after a show but no later. Why take any chances? We were never approached or hasseled by any of those that lived on the streets but it can make you uncomfortable.I highly recommend the Whitcomb. The hotel restaurant was great, limited menu but everything was delicious and David he worked the morning shift was always attentive. The concierge was always available to help you especially Carley and Jan as well as the others. One problem... the 6th floor did not have an ice machine.

Great Decor

The hotel was lovely, had a really good feel to it and the staff were very nice. The neighbourhood though wasn't the best. There were a lot of quite scary and demanding homeless people. We felt comforatable enough walking about during the day but not at night. Public transport was fantastic and accessible. The room was probably too small for 4 of us and the beds are tiny for doubles. All in all good value and really beautiful, the valet was a bit Mickey Mouse though!

Great hotel and location

I love this hotel. The reservations employee bent over backwards to accomodate my needs. The staff were helpful and extremely friendly, especially the concierge. Although it's 2 short blocks from the nicer part of downtown, it's right in front of a bus stop and cable car stop which came in handy every day. The bathroom is a bit small but so what, it's a bathroom! Will definitely stay there again, especially considering the price.

I thought it was great!

The Whitcomb is very convenient to the local transportation. Right outside is the trolley or the BART. A few blocks away is a mall and lots of outside stores that you can walk to. If you're going to a 49ers game like we did, the public transportation has shuttles that run right near the hotel for $7 round trip. I thought that was pretty awesome. The rooms were a little small but very clean. I don't spend much time in the hotel room so it didn't bother me. Overall this hotel is great, everyone there was helpful, and I would definately stay there again if I ever go back to San Fran.
