A short guide to: Cannes

Best-known for its film festival, Cannes promotes a jet-set image. Celebrity visitors enjoy high-rolling entertainment in clubs and casinos along the famous Croisette promenade with its ornate seafront hotels. The graceless Palais des Festivals is the main venue for award ceremonies. Cannes has few sights, but its medieval castle houses an interesting ethnographic museum. Local beaches are bottle blondes of imported sand.

Could do better

The hotel appears to have been recently refurbished but whoever designed the rooms has obviously never had to stay in one. Spot-lights may add to the ambiance but try to read the instructions to operate the safe in the dark. Wardrobe storage is poor - the safe and mini bar occupy most of one side and the door on the other side opens the wrong way. Have a go at using the mirror when you find it. Clue - it's on the wardrobe door that opens the wrong way. The en-suite with separate "cupboards" for the WC and shower/wash basin are both small and how about putting a few pictures on the walls to brighten up the room. Breakfast is expensive and you can get better value elsewhere. On a more positive note the hotel is reasonably central, clean and the staff are friendly.
