Description

Location. This historical hotel occupies a 15th- century palace which housed cardinals for 65 years and priests for 200 years, and lies 400 metres from St Peter's Basilica on the avenue leading to St Peter's Square. Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) is 30 kilometres away.
The hotel provides a tranquil atmosphere which invokes its long history as a refuge for cardinals and priests. Frescoed by Pinturicchio and his students, the palace was completed around 1490. It was considered so beautiful that Charles VIII stayed here rather than the Vatican before leading his military expedition to southern Italy. During World War II, the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, which traces its origins to the Crusades, purchased the palace. Part of the palace is used by the Order as its headquarters. Since 1950, the remainder has housed Hotel Columbus.

The air- conditioned restaurant features walls and a high vaulted ceiling with original 15th-century frescoes. Other historical features include 16th-century ceiling frescoes by Francesco Salviati and two small 17th-century fountains. Reputedly Rome's first interior garden, the walled courtyard is shaded by laurel trees and is where cocktails and a complimentary buffet breakfast are served in warm weather.

Guestrooms. Hotel Columbus offers 92 air-conditioned guestrooms with street or garden-courtyard views in a four-storey building. Rooms are decorated in a typical Italian style with tiled floors and dark woods. Amenities include high-speed Internet connections (surcharge), minibars, laptop-sized safes, and satellite television. Modern bathrooms come with phones and shower/tub combinations or walk-in showers.

Expert Tip. Unnoticed by most guests, a 15th-century clock on a wall facing the garden courtyard tells the time on sunny days. Protruding from the clock's centre is a long spike that casts shadows on the face's Roman numerals as the day passes.

Vatican from our window!

Although our first room wasnt anything special, the service made up for everything. Breakfast needs improving.

Fabulous location

This hotal was great in terms of location and style. On postcard perfect street! And hence close to many sightseeing opportunities. Rooms at hotel were grest. I think I probably stayed in one of the most basic rooms, but even this was very good indeed. Comfortable bed, nice old furnishings and excellent shower! The staff were very pleasant also - although I didn't really require their assistance at any time.

Super Staff Charming Hotel Ideal location to which we will be back again

We stayed 4 nights in the hotel. It is in a perfect location for Saint Peters, well served by Metro and bus routes. The staff were pleasant and always very willing to assist with directions etc. I could not get the safe to work, I telephoned reception and had a service call within a few minutes, "Mea Culpa" it was working fine. Our booking included breakfast, it was well worth it. The breakfast was well suited for all tastes. The room in which it was served was exquisite.

Good Location for Vatican

The building is a converted manstery near to the Vatican so is old and retains its ancient feature inside and renaissance paintings of monks. The rooms are of average comfort and dimly lit, althouth large. Not to everone's taste but I didn't mind it, especially when you are rewarded with a view out onto a medieval courtyard from the small windows. Our bathroom , however, smelt of smoke, and this tended to permeate into the bedroom. The bar and coffee lounge was classy. The restaurant decor was magnificent with decorated and paintings on the ceilling. The same could not be said about the food. This was an attempted at fusion cooking with unusual ingredients and mixture but the combinations did not work. Some of the food was oversalted and some undercooked, making it barely edible. At 60 euros a head , the restaurant was a complete waste of money.

Great hotel

The Columbus was a beautiful building, originally a palace and completely awesome. The garden was a lovely place to reflect on the day, peaceful and pretty. The staff were extremely helpful. Breakfast was not very special, quite basic but OK. The location is fantantic - 1 minute walk from the Vatican and all the tour buses stop outside. I would go again.

Roman pleasure

a GREAT LOCATION, A BEAUTIFUL BUILDING ...With paintings of eminent priests, and popes on the walls, Hotel Columbus has a religious feel in keeping with its surroundings.. after all its just yards from St Peter's Basilica. It's cool, tranquil, and a lovely place to return to after a hot day of sightseeing in the city sun. A lovely place to relax in the evening is the Hotel garden with fountains. But don't leave it too late for a late night drink. They close the bar and garden and midnight - and no amount of pleading will prevent them. This was the only blackspot in an otherwise restful stay.
