Did not live up to expectations!

Unfortunately the hotel was not quite as anticipated. The room also had terrible reception on it's TV channels and only had US channels when normally you would get Sky News, BBC News 24 for example. The staff on the front desk were not particularly helpful and when we mentioned the poor TV reception they did nothing to alter it so we had crackily TV for 5 days. Also the stair well smelt bizarely of fish (no idea why?) and was very grotty. There was quite heavy noise from the street below from about 7am onwards, very busy area for traffic. It also said we would have a safe but we did not get one and also no kettle or tea making facilities and no bathrobes as not mentioned. All in all the hotel looked very nice on the surface but did not quite live up to its description

Not impressed

Good location.Lobby staff good and helpfull at all times. But rooms need a good updating. Furniture shabby and carpet all stained. Cleaners need a good kick up the backside, rooms always dusty, blinds filthy and had to ask for clean towels every day. Definitely not up to the star rating advertised.

A good quality stylish hotel with few drawbacks

I stayed in this hotel with my girlfriend in the second week of January in one of the Penthouse Lofts on the top floor. The hotel was easy to find, and had subways on 72nd and 79th street making it easy to get around New York. I was impressed at the lavish reception with polished black marble, and the piano all very swish. Unfortunately whilst we were there was no pianist as the website suggests. Our room was good, with a very large king bed, but I was disappointed by the size of the balcony about 2 square meters. All of the apartments to the right of us had much bigger balconies, a case of bad luck, but the view was great and made up for the small size. It's also worth noting that on floor 16 there is a very large communal balcony with lots of seating, well designed and very personal. The only other draw backs from the room, was that some of the wallpaper was peeling off the walls at the bottom, and the low hot water pressure that came in spurts. I am glad I got the hotel when it was a third off otherwise I would have felt that I had paid over the odds. The hotel does not have a restaurant or bar but there is one next door, with a side door in the hotel leading straight into it. There was no room service menu or mention of it anywhere whilst we were there, although we did see breakfasts being delivered to certain rooms, so ask.

Not sparkling clean

the cleaners don't do a sparkling good job. and even after staying for 10 nights, they didn't change the bedsheet. the TV had problems with a lot of the channels and the hotel staff blamed it on the cable company. the bellboy sent our bags to the wrong room so we had to wait for 3 hours to get our things back. otherwise, the deskstaff are nice and the hotel is clean.

Great location but average hotel only

The hotel is in a great location, Upper West side, just a few minutes walk from the Subways 1,2,3 that take you quickly to Mid- and Downtown. The hotel, however, is rather average. The rooms are ok, but the hotel is lacking attention to details. You also have to pay additional for internet access (over 50 USD for a week or about 12 USD per day). We tried to get room service on the evening we arrived but all was offered was a delivery from the diner acrosss the street, which we can't recommend at all. The only reason for us to go back would be either a really good price or because of the location. As said, average hotel though and the pictures on the website promise more and raise expectations but the hotel does not deliver it. Sad but true.

We were in New York for a week for our honeymoon and chose a location near Central Park so we could escape the streets from time to time. Very pleased with this choice as lovely area with tree lined streets and no shortage of decent restaurants, bars, delis, cafes and shops. Perfect in fact for nipping out for breakfast/lunch/dinner or grabbing a picnic for the hotel room or central park (boating lake 5 mins away). For us the advantages of this location greatly outweighed the extra 6 minutes on the subway or 25 minutes walk to mid-town. Taxis very reasonable too! You might feel differently if only in NY for a couple of days and not expecting too much downtime though it suited us perfectly. Paid a little extra for a superior room and while this could be considered as nothing bigger than a reasonable sized double I understand it was good by NY standards and very well designed/decorated (flat screen TV, comfortable big bed and modern shower room). Very smart. Daily maid service excellent too. When we visited, the hotel bar/restaurant had not yet opened. This was absolutely no hardship as there are many great places nearby and felt safe walking back to hotel later on. Recommended as a great place to stay if you value mixing the streets of NY with the opportunity being able to visit what has to be the best park in the world from time to time!

Memories were made of this

Booked a couple of nights at On The Ave for the birthday of my girlfriend (who comes from New York originally), and also with the intention of popping the question. When I mentioned this to the friendly and helpful receptionist (out of earshot of my girlfriend, naturally), she made a couple of phone calls and was able to upgrade us to three levels above the room that I'd booked. The room was wonderful, and the proposal was accepted (despite my having to abandon the initial idea of using the hotel's terrace, due to a group smoking out there).
