The trip was a birthday surprise for my daughter. The hotel met all expectations from arrival to leaving. I had spent weeks researching on the net where to stay. The special offer made my final decision. The staff were friendly and helpful. The provision of robe and slippers were welcome after a long days shopping, and the umbrella a necessity for our visit. Room was clean and comfortable. Tea/coffee making facilities would be a good addition for guests. I would choose to stay there again.

Ugly from the outside but lovely inside. Pay for an upgrade to get a fantastic view of Central Park - it's well worth it. We managed to walk to most places from here but it has a subway station right next door to get to the places that are downtown. Lovely restaurant next door for a special meal and a cheap, good quality deli just outside the hotel. Perfect!

There are several Helmsley hotels in New York, but this was the original Park Lane Hotel and has retained many of the attributes of the luxurious days of its past. The deal obtained by Hotels.com is quite remarkable in providing 4-star facilities at 2-star prices, but that just covers the room. Food and drink prices are high and it's much better to eat out. They also whack you $15 a day for wireless Internet access which many hotels provide free of charge these days. It's worth having one breakfast in the first floor (2nd by US counting) dining room with its huge windows and their magnificent views over Central Park, but at $30 a head it's more than twice what you'll pay in local diners, which provide better food and (in our case) service. I must add that our surly waiter was the only exception to the very helpful and courteous service given by all the other hotel staff, so that doesn't really count. Overall, very good indeed, a perfect location for a few days of luxury.

Having read some of the later reviews on this hotel, I was dreading arriving! However, the hotel is in such a fantastic location that any shortcomings can be forgiven. The concierge staff were helpful when asked. They don't volunteer information but are great if asked specifics. The rooms are of a reasonable size and have everything you could need for a short stay. Yes, it could do with updating but some of that adds to its charm. I would definitely return.

This hotel is really handy for Central Park and Bloomingdales and is about a 20 min walk from Time Square, 30 min walk from The Empire State Building and round the corner from Broadway. The Grayline Tour Bus stops right outside the hotel and I would advise buying a 2 or 3 day ticket to get round New York. The hotel is clean and looks very impressive. although the staff are courteous they could have been more helpful. The concierge just handed me a leaflet when I was enquiring about tours of the city. He didn't tell me anything about them. On the plus side he did tell me not to book theatre tickets through the hotel as they used an agent and charged about another $60 on top of the standard price ticket! The rooms were clean and looked at twice a day with chocolates left in the room. There are no coffee making facilities in the room but there is a small fridge in the bathroom area and an ice bucket but nowhere to get ice from! The rooms are Ok but the furniture is big and could do with being more modern. The bathroom needed updating and looked the worse for wear. The ventilation unit in the bathroom is on constantly and was noisy even with the bathroom door closed. It was an expensive hotel for the services received however, it does have an excellent location which is worth paying for. I would stay there again.
