Service of the bar and reception staff was excellent and made up for the fact that the hotel is a little tired and definitely in need of the refurbishment that it is undergoing.

There's a holiday in express down the street that is 100 times better!
Staff was not good, neither was the hotel condition in general. After a few days, I needed to spend the night again in Birmingham and I found a Holiday Inn Express down the street on Stratford road for the same price that was excellent. That Holiday Inn Express is not listed in Expedia though :(
