Directions

From Edinburgh Airport (EDI):
Distance to The Ben Doran is 7.5 miles, approximately 20 minutes' drive.

Getting there. Airlink 100 operates express bus services to the city centre. Buses run every 10 minutes and depart from the bus station next to the terminal. An open-return pass costs 5 GBP. The N22 night bus runs between midnight and 4 a.m. Taxis wait at a rank next to the terminal, and cost approximately 10 GBP-20 GBP to the city centre, depending on traffic and time of day. Waverley, Edinburgh's main railway station, can be reached by bus or taxi. Regular trains leave Waverley for Glasgow and most major destinations throughout Scotland and England. Prices are all subject to change.

Getting around. Edinburgh city and the Lothian region are served by a good bus network. There are hop-on, hop-off stops for city bus tours throughout central Edinburgh. Black cabs are available from the streets. The historic centre's cobbled streets are best explored by foot. Driving is not recommended for visitors, due to the complicated one-way systems.

Driving directions. From Edinburgh Airport:
Turn onto the City Bypass (A720), heading south and east.
Drive around the city and exit the bypass at Straiton Junction, joining the A701 towards the city centre.
The Ben Doran is three miles along this road on the right.

Great location for great price

Good location within easy walking distance to the Royal Mile and plenty of food choices. Spacious, nice room. Parking is a bit away and not free but reasonable. We ate breakfast elsewhere because it is a bit pricy here.

Adequate

Customers should be aware that the Ben Doran is a Guest House and not a hotel as available information stated when this accomodation was booked, hence we were disappointed as the amenities expected for a hotel were not available. As a Guest House it's fine. The King size bed that my booking confirmation indicated I shoudl expect was in fact two twin beds pushed together, which isn't the same thing. Whilst there is parking at this Guest House it is insufficient to accomodate all guests, however there is parking availble in a nearby side street. The location is quite good - either a 20 min walk from the city centre or a bus ride away - buses are cheap and frequent, and there is a bus stop close by (both inbound and outbound). The cooked breakfasts are good, and is one of only a few places I have stayed at that can keep a breakfast buffet hot rather than tepid. Staff and proprieters were attentive and helpful

Worth the walk

This lovely hotel/bed and breakfast is located approximately 1 mile from the train station. The room was comfortable and the staff was very nice. You do share a bathtub/shower, but you have a sink in your room. I really enjoyed my stay and highly recommend it for the price.

pretty good all round

Clean premises, helpful staff, good breakfasts, reasonably convenient location. It was nice to be able to use the Internet, though it costs a fiver to do so. The owner wasn't the politest person I've dealt with, but everyone else was fine.

Reasonable find

Considering that the hotel was booked with no prior knowledge about location, it was brilliantly placed for lots of buses into the centre. The only drawback of the room was that it was not ensuite, there was a shared toilet with a shower cubicle on the floor. Having said that, on the floor below there was a bath-tub in the bathroom. In terms of food it was a standard buffet for breakfast although I was slightly surprised that there were no traditionally Scottish items on the menu. There was an evening menu as well, but it was limited to 3 choices. As mentioned before though, the transport links were good and so there were lots of restaurants nearby. Overall it was a reasonable place to stay though if it was ensuite it would have been better.

Would stay there again

Although the distance on the map shows the Ben Doran pretty close to the Royal Mile, take the bus (it's easy and convenient)! Maps don't show how hilly Edinburgh is!

Very impressed!

My partner and I stayed here for a few days of sightseeing in January. The hotel was clean and comfortable, with very helpful, friendly staff and excellent breakfasts. It is ideally placed for easy access to all the attractions of the city centre - it is only 15 minutes on foot from Princes Street, and there are also very frequent buses. There is also an impressive array of extras on offer, such as help with booking excursions, and room servic and packed lunches are also available. It is a lovely hotel and I would definitely stay there again.

It was alright!

It is good for a guesthouse-so dont expect a hotel. The room was comfortable, tidy but the bed was quite uncomfortable. We had a room facing the front so it was quite noisy from the traffic. Shared bathroom was less of a problem that we first thought but still annoying if you want to go to the loo and have to quickly get dressed again. Bathrooms however were nice, clean and well maintained. Room service menu very limited. Service was great by all staff, who were perfectly happy to call a cab for us (and cancel) with no hassles. Walkable distance to city centre. All in all, a good little place to stay in.
