Although we had several drinks at the pub, we found that the food was about 50% more than the going rate.

The St. James tube stop is half a block from the hotel, but the Westminster stop is two blocks and gets you directly onto the Red Line.

Near the hotel there are plenty of places to eat at lunch but not a lot of choices except pub food (there are a few in the area) for dinner. I'd recommend Pret (they're all over London) for a quick and cheap lunch - their sandwiches are fantastic!!!!

Given the exchange rate, the best value in dining is in the local pubs.

We stayed seven days at the Sanctuary House, and it is a great place. It is one block from the St. James' underground stop, two blocks from St. James' park, and 4-5 blocks from Westminster Abbey and Parliament. Yet is on a quiet street. It is a small hotel in a charming building; rooms are comfortable and the price is right. Overall - outstanding.

Stayed at the Sanctuary House for two weeks in September. The room was fine...comfortable, clean and not cramped. The pub downstairs is really handy if you've walked all day and don't feel like wandering far for a meal. Several more pubs in the immediate area but you'll have to go afield for "nicer" dining. The location is marvelous. A short walk to Westminster Abbey, Parliament, Buckingham Palace and St James's park. And assuming you'll use the tube, which is really the only sensible way to move about London, half a block to the tube station. A moderate walk to the Tate Britain. Located in a busy area by day but quiets down, except for pub activity which isn't particularly boisterous, at night. I can't think of any reason to stay any place else if the Sanctuary House has a vacancy. Do use the tube to get about. Buy an Oyster card for the tube since single ride cash prices are ridiculous. Best deal by far is a seven day travelcard, even if you only use it for five or six days. Oyster and travel cards work on the bus system too. Food costs about twice what you'd expect. Not much help with that but Pret (found all over) is OK for light breakfast and lunch and cheaper than most.

Great rate, super location as it is within 5-10 mins to walk to Big Ben, Westminister Abby, Buckingham Palace. Hotel is a few minutes away from the St James Tube (metro) station and from there you can easily get to all other parts of london, Harrods, Tower of London, China Town, theaters, etc. Use the Tube and get a 24 hour ticket then enjoy.
